What the course is about

Our course is all about creating landscapes using watercolor painting. Along the way, we’ll dive into not just watercolor techniques, but also how to build a composition and work with references.

Important topics and techniques we'll dive into during the course:

  • step-by-step process (workflow);
  • working on wet, damp, and dry paper;
  • touches are the borders between different washes or brushstrokes;
  • glazing means working in several layers.

We'll also talk about some common issues artists run into when working with watercolor: how to avoid muddy colors and making your painting too dry.

Who this course is for:

This course is perfect for anyone who wants to learn how to paint landscapes in watercolor. A landscape isn’t the same as painting specific objects, like flowers or leaves. That’s why the watercolor techniques for landscapes are different from those used in botanical watercolor.

It doesn’t matter what your skill level is. If you really get into the process, you’ll definitely get better and find your own style.

Course program:

Lesson 1

Introduction. What this course is about

In this lesson, we'll get to know each other a bit, and I'll also tell you more about what you can expect from the course.

Lesson 2

List and overview of materials for the course

In this lesson we will get acquainted with the materials we need for the course.

Lesson 3

«Autumn in Khibiny»

Duration – 1 hour 20 minutes

Khibiny is a small mountain range in the center of the Kola Peninsula; the names of ridges, peaks, rivers and lakes sound like a fairy tale about elves: Poachvumchorr, Tulyok, Rischor, Vortkeuayv… We will start our course with a sketch of a foggy autumn morning in Khibiny, at Lake Maly Vudyavr.

In the lesson we will learn to:

  • analyze photo references and come up with a composition based on them;
  • plan the sequence of work in advance, breaking it into stages;
  • work with wet paper;
  • depict trees in the background and foreground.

Lesson 4

«Red House»

Duration – 1 hour 20 minutes

When I painted the original sketch, a local resident came up to me, and we started talking. I said to him, «how beautiful it is here», and he replied – «yes! I have lived here for 20 years and every day I feel happy because of this beauty». It is not often that people know how to appreciate what they see every day, that is why artists are needed – we will try in our sketch to convey the special atmosphere of this place.

In the lesson we will learn to:

  • create effects of warm light and cool shadows;
  • depict simple-shaped buildings;
  • convey the texture of wooden walls.

Lesson 5

«First Snow»

Duration – 1 hour 40 minutes

This abandoned house used to be a village school. It stands on a low gentle hill a little away from the road and, like most old houses, fits very harmoniously into the surrounding space.

In the lesson we will learn to:

  • paint pines, grass, wooden buildings;
  • work with the background and foreground;
  • create rhythm in the composition – that is, arrange groups of similar objects on the sheet.

Lesson 6

«Boats»

Duration – 2 hours

I painted the original sketch on the shore of the White Sea in the village of Lopshenga. You could say there is no real road to this village – you can drive by car in some places only along the sandy shore at low tide. Then you still need to cross the bay by boat and drive a few more hours to Arkhangelsk. So boats in Lopshenga are an important part of life.

In the lesson we will learn to:

  • draw boats;
  • paint the texture of old painted wood;
  • paint a sandy shore, create the texture of sand using watercolor.

Lesson 7

«Teriberka»

Duration – 1 hour

The Barents Sea coast is usually steep cliffs; the long Teriberka beach is rather an exception. The subject of this sketch is the clouds and their reflection in a small bay where at low tide there are no strong waves.

In the lesson we will learn to:

  • paint the sky with clouds;
  • paint the surface of the sea;
  • paint a sandy shore, convey the texture of sand with watercolor.

Lesson 8

Mistakes in watercolor

In this lesson I will show and tell you about the main mistakes in watercolor.

Lesson 9

«Lighthouse»

Duration – 1 hour

The lighthouse is good because it perfectly gathers the space around itself, becoming the center of the composition. But for us this subject is also interesting because it allows us to work with mountainous terrain, rocks and gorges.

In the lesson we will learn to:

  • paint snowy mountains;
  • analyze the relief and depict it using light and shadow;
  • create hard and soft transitions from shadow to light in watercolor.

Lesson 10

«Northern Lights»

Duration – 1 hour 10 minutes

The northern lights are interesting because it is precisely with watercolor that we can come closest to conveying its ethereal, intangible nature. This sketch with the lights will help us advance in understanding the watercolor technique more than any other subject – because here success completely depends on your ability to assess the degree of paper moisture. And this, in my opinion, is the most important skill for working with watercolor.

In the lesson we will learn to:

  • paint the northern lights;
  • achieve color and tone intensity in one pass;
  • determine the degree of paper drying by its appearance.

Lesson 11

«Pomors»

Duration – 1 hour 40 minutes

Pomors are people living along the shores of the White Sea, who once sailed to Grumant (as they called Spitsbergen) in their kochs (small sailing vessels). In this lesson we will draw such a koch under sail against the background of a glacier.

In the lesson we will learn to:

  • paint glaciers and reflections in the water;
  • create soft and hard edges (boundaries between color spots, washes, or brushstrokes).

Lesson 12

«Flight over the Polar Sea»

Duration – 1 hour 30 minutes

Bluish ice of the polar sea, turquoise puddles on it, dark blue water filled with air bubbles, and finally, indigo where the water is calmer. And on top of that – white lace of foam. And here’s the question – the ever-hungry skua circling behind the stern, watching for fish – how does it perceive this endless blue-and-white kaleidoscope?

In the lesson we will learn to:

  • make large color washes;
  • practice soft and hard edges (boundaries between color spots, washes, or brushstrokes).

Lesson 13

«Secrets of Flowing Water»

In this lesson we will paint a fountain. The subject is not easy, because flowing water constantly changes its shape and has no clear hard edge. But it is watercolor, as a water-based medium, that allows us to paint a fountain easily and convincingly.

In the lesson we will learn to:

  • depict a fountain without white paint;
  • create soft edges (transitions from one color to another).

Lesson 14

«Antarctic Summer»

Duration – 1 hour 50 minutes

Penguins are almost as charming as house cats. You can watch them endlessly. In this subject we will pay tribute to their determination to walk on two legs like humans, although they can slide on their bellies across the ice much faster, like on sleds. But they diligently waddle on their short legs, sticking out their wings, and become like enchanted, yet even more endearing, people.

In the lesson we will learn to:

  • build a multi-figure composition;
  • draw penguins and icebergs;
  • practice soft and hard edges (boundaries between color spots, washes, or brushstrokes).

Lesson 15

Course Finale

So our creative journey has come to an end! Let’s remember what we have learned and listen to some parting words for future creative victories!

Frequently Asked Questions

Even if you think you have no talent and have never drawn before, the course will still be useful for you. It’s important to remember that talent is something all people are born with. Drawing is a skill that can be developed and improved through practice and learning.

The course is designed for all skill levels, including beginners.

If you’re on a plan without feedback, it will depend on your own pace of going through the lessons.

On plans with feedback, we actively go through the lessons within two months from the moment you «unfreeze» the course.

In general, I recommend taking the course at a relaxed pace and enjoying the process.

It’s never too late to learn to draw. At our school, 30% of students are over 50. And they enjoy drawing, developing their skills, creative thinking, and feeling younger at heart and mind!

At the end of the lesson, you upload a photo of your work. The instructor can leave text, graphic (markups on the drawing), and audio comments on your work.

At the bottom of each lesson there will be a comments section where you can ask any questions about the learning process.
