What you'll paint at the marathon
We're Painting Mountain Landscape with Ilya Ibryaev
In this lesson, you'll learn how to:
- convey the misty atmosphere of a mountain landscape
- paint rocks and stones with loose watercolor brushstrokes
- create depth in a landscape using planes
- work on wet paper for soft, misty transitions
- add expressive accents on dry paper
There are two ways to get to the mountains. The first is to buy a ticket, pack your backpack, fly for eight hours, and then spend another three hours bouncing around in a bus, breathing in exhaust fumes and someone else's sandwich.
The second approach is to wet the watercolor paper. On the damp surface, the mist spreads on its own, and the mountains emerge from nowhere, like a memory of something that never happened to you, but could have.
Ibryaev paints rocks with free brushstrokes — as if the stones owe him something. His landscape has three planes, and each one recedes into depth with the dignity of a doorman who knows his worth. No backpack needed. Just a brush and a bit of trust in wet paper.
We'll paint March in the Forest with Igor Khaikov
In this lesson, you'll learn how to:
- preserve the white of the paper to convey sunlit snow
- work with the bypass technique, highlighting light areas with dark spots
- convey water with reflections of light and landscape details
- blend color into color on wet paper
- combine wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry techniques
March — is when nature has already decided but hasn't announced it yet. The snow is still there, but with the expression of someone packing their suitcase. The water is already glistening, trees are reflected in it upside down, and in this inverted world, everything looks more honest.
Khaikov teaches how to preserve the white of the paper — meaning, don't touch what's already perfect. By the way, this is a life philosophy, not just a watercolor technique. You work around the light areas with dark patches, and suddenly — the snow glows in the sunlight, even though you never touched it.
Thirty-five years of experience, and the person learned the main thing: sometimes the best thing you can do is step back at the right moment.
We'll Paint Autumn Waves with Natalia Nesterova
In this lesson, you'll learn how to:
- use masking fluid wisely based on your skill level: the less experience you have, the more actively you should use this helpful tool — the mask
- understand the balance of color saturation — we'll paint the waves with more vibrant colors, while keeping the sea and sky in a muted palette
- use different techniques in our work — we'll paint the sky wet-on-wet, and the foreground wet-on-dry, almost without pencil, relying on your own result
The sea in autumn isn't a resort postcard with «Wish you were here» written on it. It's a serious conversation at raised tones. The wave comes at you with such conviction that you want to move your easel back.
Nesterova divides the painting in two: she paints the sky wet-on-wet, and the foreground wet-on-dry. At the top — soft, blurred tenderness; at the bottom — crisp texture and character. Like a good novel, where the first chapter whispers and the last one slams the door. Masking, Natalia says, depends on experience: the less experience you have, the bolder you should mask.
Seems like this applies not just to watercolor, but to Mondays too.

Secrets of Depicting Light Flow
In this lesson, we'll dive deeper into studying light flow. We'll work on creating an expressive solution that will help us technically and convincingly convey the feeling of light penetrating through trees, creating an illusion of movement. You'll learn how to:
- convey the flow of light expressively;
- convey the feeling of light filtering through tree foliage;
- work on a wet pigment underpainting, intensifying accents along the flow of light.
Flowers in a Countryside Landscape
Learning to combine still life and landscape in one painting using daisies. You'll learn how to:
- subordinate secondary details to the main ones;
- highlight key elements;
- use techniques for blending colors, as well as techniques for working around areas;
- show the difference in detail between planes.
Study without reference. Structure of a sea wave
In this lesson, we'll explore the main types of waves and their structure, then reinforce what we've learned through a study without a reference. You'll learn how to:
- build the wave not from the reference, but from your knowledge;
- use a limited palette to achieve harmonious shades and depth;
- convey the volume and movement of a wave using tone and color, even with minimal pigments;
- apply theoretical knowledge to create a realistic seascape study.
