The crowd brings the scene to life — people are rushing, traffic keeps moving. In this lesson, we’ll paint a retro scene and capture the vibe of that era.

Kolokolnaya Street

In this lesson, we’re heading to Kolokolnaya Street in Saint Petersburg — a beautiful spot with some really unique architecture. The street is full of life, with traffic passing by and historic buildings lining the road. We’ll try to capture the vibe of the street: its coziness, historical importance, and that special atmosphere.

The Majestic Saint Isaac’s Cathedral

Saint Isaac’s Cathedral in Saint Petersburg is an outstanding architectural landmark with its domes and columns, a true symbol of the city. In this lesson, we’ll paint it, capturing its monumentality and grandeur.

  • figure out the value, how it changes between the foreground and the background;

A Snowy Day on the Griboyedov Canal

On a snowy day, the Griboyedov Canal is calm. The Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood is barely visible through the snow. The streets, piled high with snowdrifts, make it feel like a winter fairy tale. Everything’s covered with a soft blanket that muffles sounds and makes the world feel mysterious. In this lesson, we’ll paint a cozy, wintry snowy day.

A Summer Day by the Peter and Paul Fortress

A tram is making its way down the road, bringing rhythm and movement to the city. In this lesson, we’ll capture the vibe where past and present come together to create the city’s unique charm.

  • paint tree foliage in a simple, straightforward way.

Stroll Across the Green Bridge

A sunny day in Saint Petersburg. A green pedestrian bridge with colorful architecture and unique lanterns. People are strolling along, bringing the scene to life. Sunlight reflections add even more energy to the atmosphere. In this lesson, we’ll paint a sunny cityscape.

  • show atmospheric perspective;
  • paint people in backlight.

Lesson 13

Evening on Kamennoostrovsky Prospect

Duration — 1 hour 40 minutes

Kamennoostrovsky Prospect is truly unique — it’s where different eras and cultures come together. The buildings here are like architectural landmarks, giving the street its one-of-a-kind vibe. In our lesson, we’ll highlight its many sides: the lively city life and the stunning historic architecture.

In this lesson we'll learn how to:

  • show atmospheric and linear perspective;
  • paint moving vehicles;
  • make your painting pop with a bold splash of color;
  • add a little accent that gives your artwork some charm.

Lesson 14

Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood

Duration — 2 hours 10 minutes

The Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood is wrapped in a snowy veil in winter. Snowflakes swirl through the air, gently settling on the ground. The reflection of the domes in the ice-covered canal adds a sense of depth. The water acts like a mirror, bending the light and colors of a winter day. The church looks truly impressive, like something out of a magical winter fairy tale — and that’s exactly what we’ll try to capture on paper.

In this lesson we'll learn how to:

  • paint architecture by picking out the essentials and leaving out the extra details;
  • paint trees without leaves;
  • paint reflections in the water;
  • create a falling snow effect using a toothbrush.

Lesson 15

Picnic on the Field of Mars

Duration — 1 hour

In summer, the Field of Mars is a green little spot with walkways and the scent of flowers in the air. Sunbeams dance on the grass, and the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood fits right in with the landscape. Its domes shine, making it look like they’re glowing. In this lesson, we’ll create a summer painting with touches of both nature and architecture.

In this lesson we'll learn how to:

  • paint the green of the trees and the green of the grass;
  • paint soft rim light;
  • paint light clouds so you don’t break up the unity of the landscape.

Lesson 16

Sunset on Troitsky Prospect

Duration — 1 hour 35 minutes

Troitsky Prospect is a street full of history and beautiful architecture. Here you’ll find the Trinity Cathedral — a real landmark. There’s a tram in the foreground. In this lesson, we’ll paint an urban landscape and try to capture the vibe of the prospect.

  • use a mix of warm and cool shades;
  • paint the wires in a lively way;
  • make the sky glow.

Course Finale

Our creative journey has come to an end. Along the way, we painted 12 pictures, each one capturing Petersburg in a different era. We explored some really fun techniques and learned how to bring out the spirit of the city’s historic architecture.

I have no idea how to paint at all. Should I even take this course?

Of course it’s worth it! The course is set up so you start with easy paintings and then move on to more challenging ones, so you’ll have plenty of time to get into the groove and reach awesome results!

This course will be useful for experienced artists too. You’ll get to practice your technique even more and expand your visual library.

At the end of the lesson, you’ll upload a photo of your artwork. The teacher can leave you a text comment, draw right on your picture, or even send you an audio message.

At the bottom of each lesson, there’ll be a comment section where you can ask any questions about the course.

If you’re on a plan without feedback, it all depends on your own pace and how quickly you go through the lessons.

With feedback plans, we actively work through the lessons for two months from the moment you “unfreeze” the course.
