What’s this course about?
I’ve put together 10 expressive animal artworks for you, featuring creatures from all over the world — from tropical birds to northern sea dwellers. We’ll be painting animals in motion, at rest, surrounded by grass, water, and light — creating not just illustrations, but lively images full of mood and character.
You’ll learn how to capture the texture of fur, feathers, and skin, work from big shapes to details, build a composition, and bring your painting to life with light, color, and personality.
Who will benefit from this course?
This course is great for beginners and for those who’ve already dabbled in watercolor — maybe you’ve tried out some techniques and have a feel for how it works.
If you feel like things aren’t turning out the way you want just yet — this course will help you level up. We’ll break everything down step by step: from a simple shape to a lively image.
Course Program
Lesson 2
List and overview of materials for the course
In this lesson, we’ll get to know the main materials we’ll be using in the course: watercolor, liners, pencils, watercolor pencils, and paper.
Let’s break down the features of each one, learn how to mix them together, and figure out how to pick tools that actually help your idea shine instead of getting in the way.
Lesson 3
Animal Anatomy
Duration — 55 minutes
In this lesson, we’ll check out the main anatomical points that are easy to spot on lots of animals. We’ll also get to know the muscle structure that shows up on their bodies.
In this lesson, we’ll learn how to:
- quickly figure out the structure;
- paint convincing animal figures without spending ages on construction.
Lesson 4
Combining Materials
Duration — 1 hour 28 minutes
In this lesson, we’ll try out how different materials work — watercolor, liners, pencils — and see what makes each one special in practice. We’ll practice mixing them together so that every material complements the others instead of clashing.
In this lesson, we’ll learn how to:
- sculpt the form with brushstrokes;
- work with tone and textures using a pen and hatching;
- use the full power of a simple pencil.
Lesson 5
Texture of Fur and Animal Skin
Duration — 1 hour 25 minutes
In this lesson, the main goal is to get the hang of different ways to paint fur — short and long, smooth and wavy. While painting a baby zebra, we’ll practice showing the body’s volume using light and shadow.
In this lesson, we’ll learn how to:
- use brushstrokes to show both smooth and wrinkled skin;
- work with the striped pattern so you don’t lose the shape;
- show spots and stripes on fur in a way that makes the animal look three-dimensional.
Lesson 6
«Forest Animals»
Duration — 1 hour 26 minutes
In this lesson, we’ll put together a lively composition with different animals, filling the page step by step with movement and personality. We’ll learn how to play with light and shadow, and how to mix watercolor and graphics so that all the paintings interact and come together as one story on the page.
In this lesson, we’ll learn how to:
- set the movement on the page using contrasts of light and dark spots;
- catch the main thing when painting animals and naturally spread different materials across the page.
Lesson 7
«Jungle»
Duration — 1 hour 48 minutes
In this lesson, we’ll create lively thickets around the animals, working with shapes and contrasts. We’ll learn how to spot the main thing in complex scenes, simplify background details, and add bright pops of color right where they help tell the story.
In this lesson, we’ll learn how to:
- simplify the silhouettes of plants and, most importantly, use contrast to show the surroundings of the main subjects (animals);
- work with a limited palette, adding pops of color for extra expression.
Lesson 8
«Barn Owl and Nightingale»
Duration — 1 hour 42 minutes
In this lesson, we’ll paint a scene where a barn owl is calmly gazing into the distance, a mouse is scurrying among the leaves below, and a nightingale is singing brightly on a branch above. We’ll learn how to create a cohesive story and convey mood through the animals’ poses and the details of their surroundings.
In this lesson, we’ll learn how to:
- combine references in a single painting;
- use masking tape to stylize the feathers;
- use stylization and simplify down to ornaments to show off the bird’s beautiful coloring;
- paint depth in greenery using a simple inversion trick;
- add pencil at the end to boost the tones and make the silhouettes pop.
Lesson 9
«Deer»
Duration — 1 hour 42 minutes
In this lesson, we’ll paint a deer with big, lush antlers decorated with leaves and ferns. We’ll learn how to show the texture of fur, capture the volume of the antlers, and add a bright botanical accent against a calm background.
In this lesson, we’ll learn how to:
- work with the background, blending some details into it while it’s still wet;
- work with a limited palette;
- keep a sketchy style in your painting, and keep things light with your watercolor;
- use a liner brush to add depth and dimension to the green foliage;
- use brushstrokes to show the texture of fur.
Lesson 11
«Andean Bear and Capuchins»
Duration — 1 hour 20 minutes
We're heading into the jungle: we'll paint a thoughtful Andean bear in deep shade and playful capuchins among lush greenery. With watercolor, we'll capture the softness of fur, the light in the leaves, and the wild nature vibe.
In this lesson, we’ll learn how to:
- place the animals on the page to create a dynamic diagonal composition;
- create a painting by combining construction and sketching along the outlines;
- control how the pigments move on wet paper;
- pick out light silhouettes using water;
- go from a colored spot to clean paper in a few different ways.
Lesson 12
«Great Curassow»
Duration — 1 hour 15 minutes
In this lesson, we’ll paint some really unique tropical birds — the great curassows, with their striking feathers and intense gaze. With watercolor, we’ll show off the contrast between their bright plumage and the lush green of the jungle, capturing the character of these rare birds and their natural grace.
In this lesson, we’ll learn how to:
- place the main characters into the scene with watercolor;
- leave soft edges;
- paint in one or two layers;
- mix shades to create texture;
- add more feather texture using colored pencils.
Lesson 13
«Shark and Turtle»
Duration — 1 hour 30 minutes
We’ll paint an underwater scene: a graceful turtle and a shark swimming among schools of fish. With watercolor, we’ll capture the movement of water, the light beneath the surface, and show you how to combine soft washes with graphic details.
In this lesson, we’ll learn how to:
- create a scene using several references;
- build the turtle and create the shark’s volume while everything’s still wet;
- use a light tone to capture the feel of clear water in a warm tropical sea;
- use a liner pen to highlight the details, but don’t overload the outlines with too much tone;
- create a bunch of moving little fish using those simple childhood shapes.
Lesson 14
«Walrus Dive»
Duration — 1 hour 43 minutes
Let’s dive into the northern waters with the walruses, capture the depth of the cold sea, the shine of their wet skin, and the clear light under the ice. We’ll create a lively and atmospheric watercolor scene from the Arctic world.
In this lesson, we’ll learn how to:
- work with masking fluid on a toned surface;
- create a smooth transition from warm shades to deep cool ones;
- place animals into space using tone;
- add details in a graphic way, using lines;
- soften up the details and tone down the contrasts with glazing.
Lesson 15
«Chicks in the Nest»
Duration — 1 hour 10 minutes
We’ll paint a touching scene from life: fluffy chicks in a nest, surrounded by forest grasses and flowers. We’ll capture the softness of their feathers, the warmth of the nest, and the lively anticipation of their very first flight.
In this lesson, we’ll learn how to:
- work in several stages, starting with a wash of general shapes;
- use a mask on a color layer or a fill layer;
- build up the flow from the edge of the paper to the center of your composition using lines;
- show different textures: the nest, the feathers;
- boost your watercolor colors with colored pencils.
Lesson 16
Course Finale
We’ve learned how to bring out the character of animals using watercolor and graphics, how to capture the texture of fur, feathers, and skin, how to put together lively compositions, and how to work with color and contrast.
Now you’ve got everything you need to start creating your own stories on paper. Wishing you tons of inspiration, the courage to explore new ideas, and lots of joy with every character you paint!

Materials for the course:
- Simple 2B pencil
- Soft eraser
- Waterproof liner pen size 01 or 02 (liner is preferable), or a black gel pen that can handle a little water (like LinkCosmo)
- Regular A4 printer paper (apx. 8” x 12”) for sketches
- Watercolor paper, cellulose or a mix (50% cotton, 50% cellulose), 300 gsm, medium grain, around A4 size (apx. 8” x 12”) (you can also use an A5 sketchbook (apx. 6” x 8”) and paint across the spread). Cotton paper works too, especially for lessons where we’ll be using a lot of watercolor.
- Water brushes sizes 1 and 2, and/or regular watercolor brushes: round brushes with a sharp tip. Sizes: No. 10-12 (large, ferrule diameter about 10mm (apx. 0.39”)); No. 5-6 (medium, diameter about 6mm (apx. 0.24”)); No. 2-4 (small, ferrule diameter about 3mm (apx. 0.12”)). Squirrel, imitation squirrel, or squirrel mix.
- A small brush can be a synthetic watercolor brush
- A watercolor set with 12–24 colors or your usual watercolor set. I recommend White Nights. Make sure your set has Ultramarine, and along with it, either Cadmium Orange (pigment PO20) or English Red (also known as Red Iron Oxide)
- Water container, cotton rag or paper napkins, masking tape (if you’re painting on sheets, use it to stick them to your board or table), craft knife or pencil sharpener for sharpening your pencil

Frequently Asked Questions
- I really can’t paint at all. Should I even take this course?
-
Absolutely, you should! The course is designed for both beginners and experienced artists. We’ll start with simple compositions and gradually move on to more complex ones, so you’ll have plenty of time to get comfortable, practice, and see your progress.
- How long will the course take?
-
If you’re on a plan without feedback, it all depends on your own pace and how quickly you go through the lessons.
With feedback plans, we actively work through the lessons for two months from the moment you «unfreeze» the course.
Overall, I recommend taking your time with the course. Enjoy the process more.
- I’m already over 60. Can I really learn to paint like this?
-
It’s never too late to learn how to paint. In our school, 30% of students are over 50. And they’re happily painting, growing their skills, boosting their creativity, and feeling younger at heart and in mind!
- How does the feedback on my artwork work?
-
At the end of the lesson, you’ll upload a photo of your artwork. The teacher will be able to leave you a text comment, draw right on your picture, or even send you an audio message.
At the bottom of the final lesson, there’ll be a comment section where you can ask any questions about the course.
- What if I miss a lesson?
-
This isn’t like regular school — all the lessons are always available as recordings, so you can set up your own learning schedule however it works best for you.
