What this course is about

This course is dedicated to the idea of a still life with flowers at its heart. It's perfect for anyone who loves exploring their surroundings through plants, flowers, elements of nature, and handcrafted objects.

Any theme can be explored from many angles. We'll learn how to compose and paint beautiful arrangements of flowers and fruit, complementing them with the objects around us — books, seashells, elegant tableware, and even birds. Our still lifes won't be academic, because we have a different goal. We'll learn to convey beauty and materiality through the lens of a more subtle perception — through a refined emotion and sense of feeling. It's no easy task, because here we'll be combining a wide variety of complex watercolor techniques, revisiting and discovering both old and new technical approaches and their combinations. In the end, we'll have created beautiful, striking works.

We'll place an emphasis on individuality and strive to move away from blind repetition or copying. Bringing your own personal touch is always welcome. The path we walk together will become your own way of solving creative challenges down the road.

Lesson 1 — Welcome
Lesson 2

In this lesson, I'll tell you about the materials you'll need for this course.
Lesson 2 — Materials
Lesson 3
"Peonies and Porcelain"
Duration: 2 hours 50 minutes
White porcelain, delicate flowers, gold that doesn't shout but glows softly. Subjects like these are deceptively simple. It seems like everything is straightforward: white on white. But this is exactly where real painting lives.
You'll learn to:
  • work with a color triad to create a lively white
  • distribute warm and cool tones across the shape of the porcelain
  • depict gold on dishware naturally and delicately
  • create dynamic energy through different angles of the flowers
  • unify the composition with a light, atmospheric background
Lesson 3 — Peonies and Porcelain
Lesson 4
"White Lilac and Marshmallows"
Duration: 3 hours
Soft light falling from a window. A white porcelain vase seems to glow from within. Fresh lilac — fluffy and fragrant, like a cloud. And in the foreground — a plate with marshmallows. A simple subject, but so many nuances!
You'll learn to:
  • create volume in white objects through color, not through darkening
  • work with the red–yellow–blue triad for a lively shimmer
  • convey the texture and volume of lilac clusters
  • maintain the balance between detail and generalization
  • place objects naturally and softly into the background
Lesson 4 — White Lilac and Marshmallows
Lesson 5
Getting to Know the Artist's Still Lifes
In this lesson, I'll share a little about my creative journey, about myself as an artist — how I paint, what subjects I prefer, and the floral still life theme I'm working with right now.
Lesson 5 — Getting to Know the Artist's Still Lifes
Lesson 6
"Book, Tea, and Flowers"
Duration: 1 hour 10 minutes
Flowers, a book, a cup. Simple things. But look a little closer, and you'll find so much air, stillness, and mood that you won't want to rush at all. This still life isn't about neatness. It's about atmosphere — soft light, the feeling of a morning when the world hasn't quite woken up yet.
You'll learn to:
  • build the composition of an atmospheric still life with flowers and objects
  • simplify the shapes of large flowers while preserving their volume
  • place the cup and book within a natural setting without losing visual unity
  • use selective emphasis and edge softening
  • create a cohesive, unifying background in a single pass
Lesson 6 — Book, Tea, and Flowers
Lesson 7
"Kingdom of the Airy Peony"
Duration: 4 hours
Imagine: a bouquet right in front of you. Up close. Every delicate petal fold, every gentle vein on a leaf, every fragile curve of a stem — as if seen through a magnifying glass. In this lesson, we're not just painting flowers. We breathe in their fragrance, peer into their very breath, and learn to notice the smallest nuances.
You'll learn to:
  • build the composition of a bouquet
  • work with greenery as a unifying element
  • create volume through soft defocusing and light
  • preserve the effect of the peonies' whiteness
  • combine dry and wet-on-wet techniques
Lesson 7 — Kingdom of the Airy Peony
Lesson 8
"Scent of August"
Duration: 2 hours 20 minutes
This piece is about composition. About the balance of large and small. About that moment when the flowers are almost spilling over the edge, and the apples seem to glow from within.
You'll learn to:
  • build the composition: complement large elements with medium and small ones
  • create smooth, soft background depths to unify the composition
  • sculpt the volume and form of the apples, connecting them to the space without a "cut-out" feeling
  • combine the dry brush technique with alla prima
  • use imprimatura spots as a colored underlay for a flowing, blending effect
Lesson 8 — Scent of August
Lesson 9
How to Create Your Own Still Life Composition
In this lesson, we'll explore techniques for putting together a creative still life. I'll share and show you how a composition takes shape for me, and how I interpret the connection between different objects and living forms into a unified scene.
Lesson 9 — How to Create Your Own Still Life Composition
Lesson 10
"Dahlias and Finches"
Duration: 2 hours 20 minutes
Today we'll paint more than just a still life. We'll create a little story — with flowers, birds, glints of light, and transparent crystal.
You'll learn to:
  • composing an atmospheric still life
  • combining dry-brush work with the alla prima technique
  • painting live flowers and birds with ease
  • capturing the sparkle of glass and crystal
  • preserving atmosphere without overloading on details
Lesson 10 — Dahlias and Finches
Lesson 11
"Autumn Bouquet by the Window"
Duration: 5 hours 20 minutes
Today is a special lesson. We'll be painting a still life featuring a bright autumn bouquet sitting on a windowsill. Seems like a simple scene... but there's a whole world in it. The interplay of light, reflections, the porcelain whiteness, the airiness of the flowers — it all comes together into one cohesive, truly living composition.
You'll learn to:
  • composing a still life with a focal point
  • distributing light in a windowsill setup
  • painting white porcelain objects in contre-jour
  • unifying a multicolored bouquet into a single cohesive form
  • creating an atmospheric autumn still life without overloading on details
Lesson 11 — Autumn Bouquet by the Window
Lesson 12
"A Country Guest with a Bouquet"
Duration: 3 hours
Today we have a very special piece to paint. A little quiet. A little sunshine. And two very different personalities in one composition. On one side — a lush, vibrant bouquet. Loud, alive, almost festive. On the other — a calm, gentle cat. Understated. A little lost in thought.
You'll learn to:
  • combining objects with contrasting personalities into one composition and creating a sense of unity
  • working wet-on-wet while preserving the white of the paper
  • knowing where and how much to leave highlighted areas to create a feeling of sunlight
  • constructing a cat's head from a perspective angle
  • creating soft fur using the right level of paper moisture
Lesson 12 — A Country Guest with a Bouquet
Lesson 13
Conclusion
Let's wrap up the course — we'll look back at the goals we worked toward and the techniques we mastered. I'll also share a few parting words of encouragement.
Lesson 13 — Conclusion

Absolutely! Anyone can learn to paint! It's simply a skill that develops with practice. Our course is structured from simple to complex so that anyone can follow along — even with zero experience. Step by step, through the hands-on practice of painting the course projects, you'll build your skills and learn to paint.

At the end of the lesson, you'll upload a photo of your work. Your instructor will be able to leave a text comment, a graphic comment (notes drawn directly on your painting), or an audio comment. At the bottom of the final lesson there will be a comments section where you can ask any questions about the course.

If you're on a plan without feedback, it all depends on your own personal pace as you work through the lessons.

On plans that include feedback, we actively work through the lessons over two months from the moment you unfreeze the course.

In general, I recommend taking the course at a relaxed pace. Enjoy the process as much as possible.
