What's this course about?

Welcome to the «Urban Contrasts in Watercolor — course with Yulia Kalashnikova»! Together, we'll create 8 beautiful watercolor cityscapes. You'll learn how to really feel and capture the vibe of the city in different seasons: the frosty freshness of a winter morning, the warmth of summer light, wet reflections on the pavement, or the glow of a sunset sky.

In this course, you'll get the hang of building a composition, learn how to balance details and big shapes, and work with color, light, and contrast — so your paintings really come alive and tell a story. We'll go from the general to the specific, from big shapes to light and shadow, making the whole process clear and inspiring.

Who will benefit from this course

01

For beginner artists who want to get comfortable with watercolor from scratch and learn how to build landscapes step by step, from simple sketches to a finished painting.

02

For those who've already tried painting but aren't happy with the results yet. The colors look dull, your washes feel flat, and the composition just doesn't «breathe».

03

For everyone who loves architectural and city scenes but feels like their work is missing depth, light, and a real sense of space.

04

For anyone who's looking for a bit more structure and inspiration. If you want to figure out how to simplify tricky shapes, build a solid composition, and really see the whole picture — so every brushstroke feels intentional and confident.

In this lesson, we'll paint a winter landscape with domes and village houses nestled in snowy silence. We'll create a piece that breathes with quiet, cold, and that clear winter light.

In this lesson, we'll learn how to:

  • work with backlighting (contre-jour) and white in an architectural landscape;
  • use this important principle: «the shadow on white is darker than the light on black»;
  • compare the white tones of objects and snow with each other and with the darkest areas;
  • use washes (both gradient and spot), soft and hard edges, and salt for effects.

  • building cubic forms and capturing reflections;
  • how to use a few different references with different compositions to create your own unique stories.

  • work with hard and soft edges;
  • capture atmospheric perspective wet-on-wet;
  • paint small details in the landscape, but keep them simple;

Lesson 9

Snowy Morning in a Cozy Courtyard

Duration — 1 hour 45 minutes

A winter cityscape with a red brick children's art school against a deep blue sky. We'll create a cozy vibe using soft shadows on the snow, warm tones for the building, and a light touch with the details — so the watercolor stays airy and lively.

In this lesson, we'll learn how to:

  • paint a vibrant winter landscape with strong side lighting;
  • paint solid watercolor washes in the sky and in the shapes of buildings;
  • figure out how to paint white in the shadows and in the light;
  • add more details to the architecture, and some fine line work to the trees.

Lesson 10

Walking Around St. Petersburg

Duration — 1 hour 20 minutes

A winter morning landscape with a snow-covered bridge, muted silhouettes of trees, and cathedral domes fading into a soft mist. We'll explore how to use color transitions and translucent layers to capture the feel of frosty air, the depth of space, and the peaceful mood of a quiet winter morning.

In this lesson, we'll learn how to:

  • paint a romantic Saint Petersburg;
  • explore that calm winter vibe, plus some extra cool tricks for painting winter and trees;
  • do granulation, let's try out the «Mist» series;
  • use washes, different touches, and simplify shapes.

Lesson 11

Snowy Street in the Light of Dawn

Duration — 1 hour 30 minutes

A watercolor winter morning is all about quiet and light. The soft peach sky glows above snowy streets, where old houses cast long shadows. In this lesson, we'll paint a snow-covered street using gentle, warm shades.

In this lesson, we'll learn how to:

  • capture that watercolor painterly vibe and paint with "grey"
  • work with just a few shades a bit differently — break your painting into steps, use different touches, and bring it all together with unifying washes.

Lesson 12

The Ring of Bells and the Noise of the Road

Duration — 2 hours 10 minutes

In this lesson, we'll capture the charm of an old town: a white-stone church with golden domes against a clear sky, and right by its walls stands a red retro bus — like it's from another era, taking us back to a gentle, nostalgic past. This meeting of history and time creates a special vibe, filled with light and the warmth of memories.

In this lesson, we'll learn how to:

  • paint architecture;
  • work with contrasts and lighting;
  • add details and staffage;
  • paint the sky using different kinds of brush touches;
  • paint a bright sunny day in Yaroslavl with the Church of St. Elijah

Lesson 13

Course Finale

In this final lesson, we'll wrap things up and talk through the key discoveries, mistakes, and breakthroughs. Over this time, we've created eight urban landscapes. We've learned how to capture the crisp freshness of winter, the warmth of a summer day, lighting, and a sense of depth in space.

Frequently Asked Questions

I can't draw at all. I've always thought I wasn't gifted. No talent. Should I take the course?

Even if you think you have no talent and you have never drawn before, the course will be useful for you. It is important to remember that talent is something everyone is born with. Drawing is a skill that can be developed and improved through practice and learning.

The course is designed for different skill levels, including beginners.

If you have a plan without feedback, everything will depend on your personal pace of going through the lessons.

On plans with feedback, we actively go through lessons for two months from the moment you "unfreeze" the course.

Overall, I recommend taking the course at a leisurely pace. Enjoy the process more.

It is never too late to learn to draw. In our school 30% of students are over 50. And they happily paint, develop their skills, creative thinking and stay young at heart and mind!

At the end of the lesson you will upload a photo of your work. The instructor will be able to leave text, graphic (marks on the drawing), and audio comments on your work.

At the bottom of each lesson there will be a comment block where you can ask any questions about the training.
