What the course is about

This course is about how a watercolor painting comes to life — from the first idea to a finished piece.

So often we spot a beautiful subject and want to paint it, but don't know where to begin. How do you choose the right colors? What steps should you think through in advance? Where should you rely on knowledge and experience — and where should you let watercolor reveal its unpredictable nature?

Throughout the course, I'll be sharing my approach to creating watercolor paintings. We'll talk about planning a composition, choosing a color palette, distributing color across layers, and how to keep the balance between a thoughtful plan and the spontaneous, living quality of watercolor.

We'll work in mixed technique and explore different genres: landscape, interior, and still life. With each example, I'll show you how I make artistic decisions and build the process step by step — from the first color explorations to the final accents.

Who this course is for

The Watercolorist's Mindset

This course will resonate with anyone who loves watercolor and constantly notices scenes around them that would make beautiful paintings — but isn't always sure how to approach bringing them to life.

The course will also be valuable for those who are already familiar with the basic watercolor techniques, have taken workshops, and want to reach a new level so they can bring their own ideas to life with more confidence.

I want to show you that knowledge about technique doesn't have to be just a collection of tricks — it can become a tool that helps you realize your own creative vision.

Course Program

Lesson 1
Meet the Teacher
In this lesson, I'll tell you a little about myself and my approach to watercolor. We'll take a look at the course program and see what studies, discoveries, and creative challenges are ahead of us. I'll also introduce you to the idea at the heart of this course.
Lesson 1 — Meet the Teacher
Lesson 2
Materials
In this lesson, I'll show you my working tools and share which paints, brushes, and paper I use. You'll learn what to look for when choosing your materials so that working with watercolor feels comfortable and enjoyable.
Lesson 2 — Materials
Lesson 3
How to Choose and Mix Colors
In this lesson, I'll show you how to create different color palettes from three primary colors — yellow, blue, and red — and capture the character of two completely different landscapes.

In this lesson we'll learn:

  • work with just three colors and get rich, varied hues from them;
  • mix colors so they stay "alive" rather than muddy;
  • see which complementary colors strengthen the atmosphere;
  • choose color combinations to match the mood of a landscape;
  • create two different landscapes through color, not detail.
Lesson 3 — How to Choose and Mix Colors
Lesson 4
"Spring Flowers"
Lesson duration: 1 hour 10 minutes
This is a lesson about the fragile beauty of a moment you want to hold onto. You'll see how even the simplest subjects can come alive in a special way when you learn to notice subtle shades of color and light.

In this lesson we'll learn:

  • think through your painting before you start;
  • convey the transparency of glass using tones and contrast;
  • paint flowers in a single layer, keeping the color fresh and vibrant;
  • work with hints and suggestion, preserving the lightness of the image;
  • create a feeling of fragility, light, and air.
Lesson 4 — Spring Flowers
Lesson 5
"Still Life in a Café"
Lesson duration: 1 hour 50 minutes
A white cup is never simply white.
Together we'll step into the cozy atmosphere of a quiet Sunday morning and see how light, reflected light, and the subtlest color nuances turn an ordinary cup of tea into a living watercolor story.

In this lesson we'll learn:

  • plan the stages of your work and choose a palette for the still life;
  • understand what reflected light is and how it affects the color of objects;
  • find the right shadow tones on white dishes in sunlight;
  • convey colorful reflections while keeping the objects white;
  • create the feeling of a calm, sunny morning.
Lesson 5 — Still Life in a Café
Lesson 6
"Still Life with Red Currants"
Lesson duration: 2 hours 20 minutes
Using a vibrant still life with red currants as your subject, you'll learn not to get lost in a wealth of detail and discover how light, color, and a thoughtful sequence of work can turn a complex scene into a light, expressive watercolor.

In this lesson we'll learn:

  • build your work in layers, starting with the dark areas;
  • convey the volume and transparency of berries through varying paint density;
  • keep the red color saturated at every stage of the painting;
  • simplify a complex scene using color and value;
  • convey the sense of transparent glass, light, and highlights.
Lesson 6 — Still Life with Red Currants
Lesson 7
"Sea Harbor"
Lesson duration: 2 hours 10 minutes
White boats, azure water, and the blazing sun of a Mediterranean harbor will help you see watercolor in a new light and discover how white paper can fill your work with air, radiance, and life.

In this lesson we'll learn:

  • determine the sequence of washes in a complex seascape;
  • plan ahead which areas need to be left white;
  • work with large areas of light and shadow;
  • convey sunlight, the transparency of water, and depth of space;
  • bring all the elements together into a unified composition.
Lesson 7 — Sea Harbor
Lesson 8
"Winter Landscape"
Lesson duration: 2 hours
A snow-covered city, muted colors, a soft haze, and the quiet of winter. In this lesson we'll not only capture the mood of a cold day — we'll also learn to see composition through an artist's eyes.

In this lesson we'll learn:

  • plan the sequence of steps for a winter landscape;
  • reposition elements to strengthen the composition;
  • use the white of the paper to convey freshly fallen snow;
  • create a winter-day atmosphere with wet-on-wet washes;
  • add details with a dry brush without losing the lightness of the piece.
Lesson 8 — Winter Landscape
Lesson 9
How to Use Copying to Develop Your Own Style
Where is the line between inspiration and copying?
In this lesson we'll explore how to use copying constructively, learn to analyze other artists' work with intention, and understand how to gradually develop your own artistic style.
Lesson 9 — How to Use Copying to Develop Your Own Style
Lesson 10
"The Durrells' House"
Lesson duration: 2 hours 10 minutes
I invite you to head to the seashore. You'll see how a well-thought-out sequence of washes helps preserve light, depth, and the freshness of watercolor — even in a scene where most of the subject is in shadow.

In this lesson we'll learn:

  • plan the stages of work on a complex landscape;
  • map out the main color masses before starting to paint;
  • work with large washes while keeping the lightness of watercolor;
  • convey sunlight and aerial perspective;
  • convey depth of space through color and tone.
Lesson 10 — The Durrells' House
Lesson 11
"Café Interior"
Lesson duration: 1 hour 40 minutes
It's the perfect time to slow down for a moment and step into a cozy café. We'll try to capture on paper the soft light, the calm atmosphere, and that special feeling that lingers after an unhurried conversation over a cup of coffee.

In this lesson we'll learn:

  • see the composition through large color masses;
  • build the work from general to specific;
  • create a solid foundation for the painting with large washes;
  • add details in a way that strengthens the narrative while keeping the image light;
  • convey the atmosphere of a cozy café while preserving the lightness of watercolor.
Lesson 11 — Café Interior
Lesson 12
"Summer Veranda"
Lesson duration: 1 hour 40 minutes
A warm summer day filled with sunshine and quiet.
In this lesson, light takes center stage. It's what will set the mood of the piece, fill it with air and depth, and give it that feeling of a cozy summer moment.

In this lesson we'll learn:

  • think through the stages of work and choose a palette for a sun-filled interior;
  • create a sense of light and air with wet-on-wet washes;
  • build a sense of space using large color masses;
  • add details wet-on-dry while keeping the freshness of the watercolor;
  • combine free, expressive painting with precise accents.
Lesson 12 — Summer Veranda
Lesson 13
"The Beauty of Everyday Life"
Lesson duration: 1 hour 50 minutes
Sometimes all it takes is a ray of sunlight, a cup on the table, and a quiet morning for a beautiful scene to emerge. This lesson will help you look at everyday things in a new way and see the beauty of everyday life through an artist's eyes.

In this lesson we'll learn:

  • work with complex interior compositions;
  • combine wet-on-wet washes with dry-brush work in a single painting;
  • simplify complex shapes while keeping the scene expressive;
  • convey sunlight, shadows, and the atmosphere of a home interior;
  • place accents so the viewer's eye is guided through the composition.
Lesson 13 — The Beauty of Everyday Life
Lesson 14
Conclusion
In the final lesson, we'll wrap things up, revisit the most important discoveries from the course, and talk about how to keep growing. Because a true creative journey doesn't end with the last lesson — it's only just beginning.
Lesson 14 — Conclusion

Frequently Asked Questions

At the end of the lesson, you'll upload a photo of your work. Your teacher will be able to leave a text comment, a graphic comment (notes on your painting), or an audio comment.

At the bottom of the final lesson there will be a comments section where you can ask any questions about the course.

If you're on a plan without feedback, everything will depend on your own personal learning pace.

On plans with feedback, we actively work through the lessons over two months from the moment you "unfreeze" the course.

Overall, I recommend going through the course at a relaxed pace. Enjoy the process as much as possible.

Absolutely! The course is a great fit for both beginners and experienced artists. We start with simple compositions and gradually move on to more complex ones, so you'll have plenty of time to get comfortable, build your skills, and see your own progress.

If you already have some experience, the course will help you deepen your skills, refine your technique, and develop your visual awareness — opening up new artistic approaches and possibilities.

This kind of learning is different from traditional schooling — lessons are always available as recordings, so you can study at whatever pace works best for you.

It's never too late to learn to paint. In our school, 30% of students are over 50. And they paint with joy, develop their skills, nurture their creativity, and feel younger in heart and mind!
