What’s this course about?

This course features subjects that look especially striking in large formats — when watercolor truly comes alive, breathes, and speaks at full volume. We'll be working wet-on-wet on large sheets, learning how to guide the flow of paint and turn happy accidents into expressive effects.

I paid special attention to something that's so important for beginning artists: how to bring a painting to a harmonious finish. What do you do when a painting seems done, but it still lacks contrast, depth, or an emotional accent? I'll show you how to gently bring it to a state of completeness while preserving transparency, breathing room, and lively texture — without heavy glazing.

We'll explore the rich variety of architectural moods across every season and time of day: soft twilight, shimmering lights after rain, crisp winter air with a snowy sparkle, dense clouds, dramatic storm skies, and reflections on water that transform a city into a magical watercolor symphony.

You'll learn to convey these atmospheric nuances so that your paintings feel rich, deep, and truly emotional.

Who will benefit from this course?

This course is designed for those who want to paint atmospheric cityscapes easily and confidently, without fear of architecture or complex references. It's perfect for beginners and for those who already paint but want more freedom, boldness, and pure enjoyment from the process.

You'll learn to work wet-on-wet, convey light and fog, simplify scenes, build mood through value and color, let go of perfectionism, and find your own rhythm. It's especially great for anyone who loves cities — their air, reflections, evening light — and wants to learn to capture it all in one breath.

Course Program

Lesson 1

Greeting

In this lesson, we'll get to know each other, and I'll tell you what to expect from the course.

Lesson 2

Materials

In this lesson, we'll talk about which materials really matter, how to pick them, and how they actually affect your results.

Lesson 3

Light Subjects to Loosen Up Your Hand

This lesson is for anyone who's afraid of doing it "wrong." We're going to paint insects — they're the perfect subjects to help you loosen up. There are endless shapes, lines, and colors in the insect world, so... you really can't mess it up!

In this lesson:

  • we’ll learn how to paint wet-on-wet, starting from a blotch, without fear and without a pencil;
  • let’s let go of control and trust ourselves;
  • let’s use watercolor as a way to relax;
  • let’s make painting a part of our everyday life — just like any other creative habit.

Lesson 4

A Rainy Day at the Airport

Duration: about 3 hours

The airport is a place full of waiting and emotions. Rain really sets the mood: wet asphalt, reflections, blurred lines, and shiny spots. We'll capture this vibe without overloading the painting with details — just using light, shapes, and soft tones.

In this lesson:

  • let’s build a complex object and show its shape in a simple way, without getting too detailed;
  • let’s work on reflections and highlights on the asphalt;
  • let’s figure out how to control the wet-on-wet technique when your brushstrokes aren’t quite dense enough;
  • let’s put together our finished piece using patches of color, while keeping that rainy day vibe.

Lesson 5

In the Harbor Before the Storm

Duration: about 2 hours and 35 minutes

Everything goes still before a storm. We'll try to capture that powerful pre-storm feeling. We'll work with a limited palette, building a composition between the sky, water, and architecture.

In this lesson:

  • we’ll learn how to work on wet paper to create mist and clouds;
  • let’s pick a minimal, unique palette for a stormy sky and water;
  • let’s simplify the city scene but keep the mood and depth;
  • let’s bring together the sky, architecture, and reflections into one beautiful, unified painting.

Lesson 6

Fog Over the Neva

Duration: about 3 hours 15 minutes

Saint Petersburg in winter isn't just about the architecture — it's about the air too: fog over the Neva, the chill, and that soft, diffused light. In this lesson, we'll work on showing how shapes melt away into the cold haze.

In this lesson:

  • let’s paint fog and haze with soft, flowing washes;
  • let’s simplify the architecture and the background, but still keep the depth and make it recognizable;
  • let’s work with a cool, muted winter palette;
  • let’s talk about how you can use value to bring all the parts of your painting together and create a unified mood.

Lesson 7

A Sunny Hour Over the Vittoriano

Duration: about 2 hours and 50 minutes

Italy sure knows how to shine. Here, the light brings out the architecture and turns shadows into real events. In this scene, we'll find scale, rhythm, and silhouette — and see how you can paint a complex city view in a light and poetic way.

In this lesson:

  • let’s simplify a complex architectural scene while keeping the rhythm and scale;
  • let’s practice building up shapes with patches of color instead of lines, working in a few layers;
  • let’s play around with warm light and its contrasts;
  • let’s learn how to guide the viewer’s attention using tone and color.

Lesson 8

At a Festival in France

Duration: about 3 hours 30 minutes

The harbor glows with lights in the evening, the city is buzzing, and the water gathers reflections of scarlet sails. We'll learn to let go of control, trust our intuition, and catch the mood: the glimmers, the rhythm, the soft shimmer of the night.

In this lesson:

  • let’s capture reflections and highlights on the water;
  • we’ll learn how to paint a nighttime scene with illuminated buildings in the background;
  • let’s work with rich local color (sails, light, windows);
  • let’s create a festive vibe using pops of color and loose brushstrokes.

Lesson 9

At Dusk by the Waterside

Duration: about 2 hours and 10 minutes

An evening Spanish church is a great excuse to turn a dark reference into a watercolor filled with light, air, and the quiet of dusk.

In this lesson:

  • we’ll learn how to paint wet-on-wet, adding tone to the underpainting;
  • let’s practice building architecture with shapes — no pencil, no extra details;
  • let’s figure out how to paint calm water and reflections;
  • we’ll figure out when to stop and how to pick up where we left off later — all without losing that fresh watercolor look.

Lesson 10

A Bridge Through the Centuries

Duration: about 4 hours and 10 minutes

In this lesson, we'll be switching up the color palette and composition, playing around with architectural shapes. It's an exercise in flexibility and growing your artistic mindset.

In this lesson:

  • let’s turn the reference into our own, painterly composition;
  • let’s pick our palette on purpose, focusing on the mood, not just the photo;
  • let’s work with a big architectural shape: scale, movement, and depth;
  • let’s boost the emotional impact using light, texture, and color.

Lesson 11

A Winter Evening in Bucharest

Duration: about 2 hours and 50 minutes

In this lesson, we’re heading out for an evening walk through a snowy city. We’ll paint glowing facades, people strolling by, and add some neon touches to make the scene feel lively and modern.

In this lesson:

  • let’s sketch out the foreground architecture in a loose and simple way;
  • let’s create depth in the distant city using shapes and silhouettes;
  • let’s bring our scene to life: add some people, cars, and falling snow;
  • let’s bring our composition to life with some contrasts and spots of light.

Lesson 12

Conclusion

Our creative journey is coming to an end — let’s wrap it up and hear some words of encouragement for your future artistic victories!

Course Materials

Watercolor

A set of professional watercolors with 24 or 36 colors (I use «Nevskaya Palitra»). Feel free to pick any brand you like and prefer.

Brushes

Pick the ones that feel right for you! I personally love working with flat brushes, so I have a bunch of square flat brushes in different sizes (made from squirrel, badger hair, and synthetic). The size of your brushes really depends on your paper — the bigger the sheet, the bigger the brushes you’ll want to use.

Paper

100% cotton, satin, 300 gsm (I use Arches and Baohong). You can go with any fine-grain paper with a smooth surface, size 38x58 cm (apx 15"×23").

Extra materials

  • Fluffy makeup brushes (synthetic);
  • Plastic cards with trimmed tips in different sizes;
  • Kneaded eraser, HB pencil;
  • Paper towel or cloth for brushes;
  • Water container;
  • A board that fits your paper size.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the feedback on my artwork work?

At the end of the lesson, you’ll upload a photo of your artwork. The teacher will be able to leave you a text comment, draw right on your painting, or even send you an audio message.

At the bottom of the final lesson, there’ll be a comments section where you can ask any questions about the course.

If you're on a plan without feedback, everything will depend on your personal pace as you go through the lessons.

On plans with feedback, we actively go through the lessons over two months from the moment you "unfreeze" the course.

Overall, I recommend taking the course at a relaxed pace. Enjoy the process more.

Absolutely! The course is designed to work for both beginners and experienced artists. We start with simple compositions, gradually moving to more complex ones, so you'll have time to get comfortable, build your skills, and see your progress.

If you already have experience, the course will help you deepen your skills, refine your technique, and develop your artistic eye by discovering new approaches and possibilities.

This course is different from traditional school — lessons are always available as recordings, so you can set your own learning schedule however it works best for you.

It's never too late to learn to paint. In our school, 30% of students are over 50 years old. And they paint with great pleasure, develop their skills, creative thinking, and stay young at heart and mind!
